History, Evolution and Successor
The Jaguar XKSS, a roadster version of the Type X, was launched in 1954. In 1957, Jaguar announced the development of a new sports car, the E-Type, which was based on the XKSS but with several modifications. The E-Type was launched in 1961 and was an immediate success. It was powered by a 3.8-liter straight-6 engine that produced 265 horsepower. The E-Type was available in two body styles: a coupé and a roadster. In 1968, Jaguar introduced a 4.2-liter version of the E-Type, which produced 280 horsepower. This version was available until 1971, when the E-Type was replaced by the Jaguar XJ-S.
